Frequently Asked Questions

What is this site all about?

This site was put up out of necessity.  I was looking for a good hosting company and found nothing but spam when I tried to look up some reviews.  Sure there were a few sites out there that given me some insight into good hosting companies, but the time wasted was absurd.

There’s two things I’m hoping to achieve with WebhostingHQ.com.  One, create an active blog with a good reader base.  Two,  learning all bells and whistles that wordpress has to offer.

There’s plenty of other sites out there, why is yours different?

No Spam. Period.  I came across a tremendous amount of spam… the popups, the hidden links, the absurd amount of spam mail… Needless to say, it was a horrible experience.   With WebhostingHQ.com, I want to change all that.  WebhostingHQ.com WILL be a clean site.  It will feature user feedback, reviews, a list of all GOOD hosting companies (backed by user reviews of course).  Get rid of the crap, get in with the good.  Not to mention saving you some coin.  I want the best deals offered to be on the FRONT page of this site.

What is hosting?

Hosting (also known as Web site hosting, Web hosting, and Webhosting) is the business of housing, serving, and maintaining files for one or more websites.

In layman’s terms, it simply means a place to put your files, create a website for the selected few (your choice) or for the whole internet to see.  From a blog to a picture of your pet rock, you can have a site of your own for everybody to see.

Why do I need hosting?

This is a question that you have to answer for yourself.   Here are some of the main reasons why people need a hosting solution. What types of hosting is there?

  • You have a company  and wish to expand into the world wide web.
  • Nothing looks more professional then your own companies email on your business card.  Would clients take you seriously if your email ended with gmail? Hotmail?
  • Free hosting companies have way too many ads or the address is too long
  • A unique website idea that will bring in viewers or customers.
  • Could be just a hobby…. The list goes on.

What type of hosting is there?

There is different types of hosting.  The 3 heavy hitters are usually virtual, dedicated and colocation hosting.  The others might include game server hosting, DNS hosting, email hosting, database hosting etc…

What is Virtual Hosting?

Virtual hosting is a method for hosting multiple domain names on a computer using a single IP address. This allows one machine to share its resources, such as memory and processor cycles, to use its resources more efficiently.

One widely used application is shared web hosting. Shared web hosting prices are lower than a dedicated web server because many customers can be hosted on a single server.

What is Dedicated Hosting?

A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting in which the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc.

 Colocation hosting?

A colocation centre (also spelled collocation, colo, or coloc) or carrier hotel is a type of data centre where multiple customers locate network, server and storage gear and interconnect to a variety of telecommunications and other network service provider(s) with a minimum of cost and complexity. Most Internet exchange points provide colocation.

In layman’s terms, it simply means you buy the hardware, ship it or visit the data center, and have it plugged into their network.  You pretty much chose your own hardware, and the colocation company provides the power, cooling, storage and the internet connection for a fee.

What should I be looking for when it comes to hosting?

You will need to find out what your requirements are.  Not evebody needs dedicated hosting.  When picking a web hosting company, think of the following:

Price, amount of sites you will be running, expected amount of visitors and/or traffic, storage space and again, price.

If you expect a small amount of traffic for a small site then go with virtual hosting.  Its cheap, fast and reliable.

If you want privacy, security to your level, or expect a tremenoud amount of traffic, then you’ll be looking at collocation or a dedicated server.

What should would be the best choice for me?

See above.  The answer is within your thought process.
